Legion, a San Franciscan lifestyle boutique, is adding four new Hackwith designs to their collection this week.  You won’t want to miss the cozy Sansome and Helleck Kimonos and Kearny and Clay Tanks.

Both the Sansome and Helleck Kimonos are perfect for wrapping up in this winter.  Grab the light gray Sansome for some extra warmth over a Selby Slip Dress, or snuggle up in the heavier, charcoal gray Helleck Kimono on chilly autumn nights.

The Kearny and Clay tanks are perfect by themselves or layered under a blazer or cardigan.  We loved the charcoal Kearny with our Tiro Tiro Aleta necklaceSseko loafers, and trousers.  We styled the light Clay Tank minimally with a gold cuff and jeans.

Legion is a San Francisco, California apparel and lifestyle boutique dedicated to providing its patrons with unique artisan-made products.  Check out their website to learn more about their mission and to find these four Hackwith pieces!

This fall we’re excited to be teaming up with Merit Goodness, an Ann Arbor-based company dedicated to feel-good clothing that gives back to the community.  20% of all Merit proceeds are directly donated to fund college scholarships for underserved youth in Detroit.  We’re proud to share our contributions to Merit’s mission with you: the Vaughn and Arbana Tops.

The Vaughn Top goes perfectly with your favorite pair of jeans and simple loafers.  Try layering it with an open-front sweater once chill weather arrives this fall.

We paired the Arbana Top with a simple pair of black trousers and some versatile Sven clogs.  The Arbana Top’s thick fabric makes it a perfect fit for your fall collection.

Check out Merit Goodness’ website for these designs and to learn more about Merit’s mission.

We are proud to announce our support and appreciation for Sseko Designs and their greatly humbling mission. Sseko is a fashion brand based in Ethiopia that hires high potential women to make sandals. These jobs allow women to earn money in a dignified way that will go directly toward their college educations. Through providing employment and scholarship opportunities, Sseko enables women to pursue their dreams and overcome poverty. In addition to sustainably supporting the local economy, 10% of proceeds from the Sseko Footwear Collection go towards the Sseko Scholarship Fund to empower and educate women. So far, Sseko has helped 47 women to go on to university!

Not only do we love their mission and impact, but we also agree with their emphasis on the importance of where things are made and who they are made by. Like HDH, there is care and a story behind Sseko’s every step. Sseko shoes are made by a team of 50 women from all walks of life in one of the oldest Ethiopian-owned shoe factories in the country, dating back the the early 1920’s. Little did we know, Ethiopia has an impressive legacy in shoe making first brought about by the Italians some time ago.

The shoes seen above are part of the Sseko Footwear Collection. The sheepskin Caramel Nomad Booties are seen on Lisa with HDH’s Merrill Coat and archived skirt and blouse created for the MN4MN fashion show. The Black Lalibella Flats are equally as comfortable and stylish; paired here with HDH’s Dale Coat and Fisk Pant. Both shoes are made to last, comprised of a cushioned foam inside and durable rubber sole. The exquisite craft of each shoe is evident, they really are something special!

Sseko has a ever-growing story and we are very excited to be apart of it! To read more about Sseko and get involved, visit their website. Purchase the shoes shown above and explore the rest of their wonderful items here.

HDH x Merit Goodness

Boutique Collaborations, Events

One of the greatest gifts one can give to another is to believe in them.

My name is David Merritt and I’m the founder of Merit Goodness. We design and sell high quality products that help kids get to college, with 20% of each purchase funding college scholarships for underserved youth.

Did you know that every 26 seconds, a kid in America drops out of high school? It’s true. I strongly believe that so many of our youth are dropping out because they have lost their aspirations. Or you can say, we haven’t helped them find their aspirations. And when someone doesn’t aspire to be, they lose their ability to believe within themselves. I argue that a person void of aspiration and belief, is a person that will not contribute to society.
At Merit, we’re building a movement to help young people aspire, believe, and contribute through high quality fashion and a program called FATE. FATE is a four-year, cohort-based program, that supports 23 Detroit high school students by preparing them to embrace education and become world-class citizens. In the past two years, participants in our FATE program have an average .46 point higher GPA than non-FATE students at their school. Our students also note (1) positive changes in how they work with others; (2) developing a sense of creativity and maturity; and (3) “coming out of their shells” regarding social skills and interacting with peers and adults, as a result of FATE.
We are so honored to be working with Hackwith Design House to bolster the momentum we are building to let any young person that “wants to” know that they “can.” And it is so very awesome, that with your purchase of this beautiful Arbor Top (see photo below), you can play a role in adding more time to that 26 second clock. Profits go directly toward our FATE program.
We greatly appreciate you and please be on the look out for more Merit X HDH madness in the coming months. You can also visit our website to grab Merit goods and learn more about our program and cause.

We are thrilled to announce our fall charity collaboration with Merit!  Give Merit is a non-profit organization based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, that is focused on helping disadvantaged youth get to college.  Their FATE program is designed to stick with students through all four years of high school and ensure they get their diplomas.  Merit is the for-profit arm that gives 20% of all of its profits to the Give Merit programs.  We love both organizations so much that we’ll be working with them all fall!

To start, the Arbor Top pictured above will be for sale on our website starting Friday, September 12.  All of the profits from this piece will go to Give Merit to help underserved youth graduate from high school and attend college.

Hackwith Design House x Indigo & Snow

Boutique Collaborations

We were fortunate enough to collaborate with the lovely and talented Annabella Sardelis, founder and designer behind Indigo & Snow, who hand-dyed the beautiful material seen in our newest collection through a process known as shibori.

Annabella was kind enough to share some background on shibori along with her design process:  "Shibori is a traditional Japanese technique of color-resist dyeing, involving intricate folds, stitches and tying, which yields one-of-a-kind designs and patterns.  My work is hand-dyed in small batches using water-based fabric dyes.“

The pieces Indigo & Snow custom dyed for the HDH June Collection were dyed with a black water-based textile dye, made with salvaged Cedar.  Annabella has found that Cedar, when reacting with water based dye baths, creates evocative, organic one-of-a-kind designs.

Most of Annabella’s pieces are hand-dyed in beautiful tones of deep blues, grays, and blacks, which is a fun and stunning spin on HDH’s traditional collections.  "Imagine the depth of blue in a blueberry or a turbulent sea.”  Between the rich colors and natural patterns, we couldn’t be happier with the results of our shibori-dyed pieces.imageShomu Dress:  While the Shomu Dress has a simple shape, it is rich in beautiful tones of blue.  We love the flattering scoop neck.  We paired the Shomu Dress with Sven clogs, a necklace from Parc Boutique, and topped it with a summer straw hat.imageHanzei Tank: The perfect tank for a hot summer day. We paired the Hanzei Tank with a pair of flowy copper pants from Zara, a Parc Boutique necklace, and navy Franco Sarto flats.imageJunna Tank:  The Junna Tank samples the many blue tones and diverse patterns resulted from the unique shibori-dye process.  The black rope drawstring is a delicate, but stunning  detail, ideal to wear in the summer.  We paired it with a Parc Boutique necklace and skinny jeans. imageRita Top: The shibori dyed pocket is such a fun detail on the Rita Top! To complement the beautiful blue in the top, we paired it with a copper pair of Zara pants, Sesto Meucci woven loafers, sunglasses, and a summer straw hat. imageAnko Top: Nothing puts a smile on our faces than a gorgeous and comfortable top that you can wear with your favorite pair of skinny jeans! We paired the Anko Top with our HDH x Tiro Tiro necklace, black Sven clogs, and well, a great pair of skinny jeans! imageTasseltry:  We can’t bear seeing the beautiful shibori-dyed fabric scraps being thrown away.  These fun tasseltry pieces are perfect for that empty wall of yours and come in all shapes and sizes–each one different in its unique way.  image

HDH x American Refugee Committee

Boutique Collaborations

Hackwith Design House (“HDH”) talked with Jessica from the American Refugee Committee (“ARC”) to ask a few questions on their mission and our collaboration on the beautiful new Haven Top.  The Haven Top is available for purchase at our online shop, and all proceeds will go to supporting the American Refugee Committee.

HDH:  We knew we wanted to give back to a nonprofit in our community, but is there a reason this collaboration is something ARC embraced as more than just accepting a check from a business?

ARC:  Absolutely. The HDH community appreciates beauty, design and individuality. So do we. Getting people the clean water, nutrition and health care they need to survive is just the beginning. Providing a space that’s beautiful and an environment that empowers a mom to care for her kids… that’s something we all feel we deserve.

The partnership with Hackwith Design House is all about shared values and shared purpose. Recognizing that people everywhere deserve beauty and individuality helps us reach people in a unique way. It’s relevant and it’s something to be proud of.

HDH:  It has been a privilege getting to know you, Jessica, and others at ARC while doing this collaboration. Why do you do the work you do?

ARC:  What gets me up every morning are all of the crazy exciting projects we’re working on. Getting to know and collaborate with people like you is incredibly rewarding, and I never know what kinds of opportunities will come next. I feel lucky to play a part in stuff that’s really changing the world.

A week ago I was sitting in Minneapolis putting the final touches on the décor and branding of a pilot health clinic in Eastern Congo. The clinic is just one part of a holistic approach to providing scalable nutrition, water and healthcare. I get to think through how a mom will experience the clinic – is it easy and reliable? Is it clean, bright and beautiful? It’s fun and inspiring work!

And now, I’m actually here… making it real! Still, it’s not easy to say goodbye to family – especially my 1 ½ year old – there’s a lot of baggage that comes with a trip to Eastern Congo. But what helps me sleep at night? I truly believe in our work. What we do really does change lives.

HDH:  I’d love to hear more about how the money raised by the proceeds of the Haven Top will impact ARC’s work?

ARC:  All of the money we raise is critical to our work. However, realistically,  the bulk of our funding is through grants. These grants act as the big engine that keeps our wheels turning – that funds projects to provide clean water, health care and medicines, shelter, protection services and more.

Our goal, then, is in filling gaps. As you can imagine, the needs are incredibly great in the places we work. And they’re not all covered by these big grants. Beautifying refugee camps with trees and vegetable gardens, building playgrounds that give young children somewhere to play and something safe to do… these things don’t fall under critical needs but their impact on people’s lives and outlook is enormous.

One of the things the money raised through this collaboration will help do is give the flexibility to fill some of those gaps that can greatly enrich people’s lives.

I hope that’s not too long-winded of a response, but I think it’s important for people to know how we function and exactly how their gift, any size, can make an impact that both saves lives and recognizes that life is more than just having access to the essentials.

HDH:  How can the people who have learned about ARC through this collaboration stay involved in your work?

ARC:  An easy way to stay in touch is to sign-up for our Insider Update. We send bite-sized updates weekly via email. They’re a great way to connect with the impact of our work and a different lens for what’s happening in our world. And, if you happen to live in the Minneapolis area, stop by and check us out. We’ll give you the grand tour!

HDH:  Where else can people go to learn about ARC and the work of organizations like yours to help refugees around the world?

ARC:  People can learn more about ARC at our website www.ARCrelief.org or by following us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is another place to learn more – the agency’s mandate is to lead and coordinate all international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide (www.unhcr.org). We have so many refugees who have made new homes and new lives in the US—we also recommend getting to know the refugee neighbors living in your community!

We are proud to announce our very first garment that gives back.  We’ll be releasing the Haven Top next Friday, June 20th, recognized as World Refugee Day. It’s the perfect top for summer days full of gratitude. 100% of the profits from the sale of Haven will benefit the American Refugee Committee.

Their headquarters is just across the river from us in Minneapolis – but their reach is worldwide. Each year they help restore hope and dignity in the lives of more than 3 million refugees. The collaboration was sparked by a desire to be a company with a conscience. Since then we’ve met some wonderful people that are doing their part to change the world.

Our friends at the American Refugee Committee get people the basic things they need to survive during a man-made or natural disaster. When a crisis hits the headlines and massive populations of people are displaced, ARC sends a team within 48 hours to start a response. From there, they build programs that work side-by-side with people to rebuild their sense of security, their livelihoods, their lives.

By purchasing this garment you’ll help to create a haven for those who need it most.  We can’t thank you enough for helping us give back.
