Meet Martha W McQuade, a woman of many trades and the latest Makers Alongside collection talent. Her natural aptitude has graced us with an incredible piece – a hand-loomed sweater that is architecturally unique and beautifully crafted.
It is difficult to establish the exact age at which Martha began her craft. Growing up under her mother’s inventive influence, she was bestowed with several skills such as knitting and sewing at an early age. These types of hands-on artistries guided her interest in being trained as an architect. After completing the graduate program in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, she worked for several architecture offices but became impatient with the slow pace of the building process. “I missed making things with my hands. At this time I started knitting and sewing again and experimenting with materials in a direct, immediate way.” It didn’t take long before people began to notice and pursue her work, so her clothing and textile business took off.
Currently, Martha teaches architecture courses at her alma mater in addition to designing and creating landscapes, buildings, furniture, clothing and textiles out of her Minneapolis studio. No matter what she is designing, Martha’s overall design focus is on the form and pattern that “are derived through a study of material properties and the process of making.” This approach is noticeable in her work and requires constant but welcomed exploration of materials and processes. From this exploration, Martha finds a boundless amount of inspiration. “It’s a problem at times – there is so much out there that is interesting and there just isn’t enough time to act on all the ideas that I have.”
We weren’t surprised to hear that Martha’s favorite HDH piece is one created for Mille, a jumpsuit that reminds her of something a coverall that a mechanic might wear. And who knows, it’s entirely possible that she someday may add ‘mechanic’ to her ever-growing list of skills.
Martha’s sweater can be found on our website; act fast, only ten sweaters were created! Other designs can be found on her website or at other boutiques in the Twin Cities.
Make sure to keep up with Martha on Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Oh, and join her mailing list!

This weeks releases are three classic pieces that offer totally different but equally effortless looks; the Drew Sweater, the Erwin Dress and the Christine Wrap!
The Drew Sweater is a lightweight, burnout wool, pull-over sweater. The knit is somewhat sheer, making it great for layering. Here we have paired it over a tank top with our Ryan Pant and a rope necklace found at Parc Boutique.
The Erwin is a wrap dress constructed of an incredibly soft tencel material. The dress is a timeless design that may be worn in any season. Elsie wears the dress with boots by Steve Madden.
Lastly, the Christine Wrap is an open wrap cardigan that features a raw edge on the interior cut. The wrap is a staple to be worn every day with any outfit. Here we have it styled with our favorite Sven clogs, Kenneth Cole cotton pants, and an HDH top created for Fine Life Co.
We are so excited for our next Makers Alongside piece: this beautiful hand-loomed sweater from Martha McQuade! Made by hand in her Minneapolis studio, this sweater is truly stunning in its unique nature. Only 10 of these sweaters were made, so be sure to mark your calendars for their release date on Wednesday, September 17th.
This week’s releases embrace the wonderfully cool fall weather that we have been so eagerly awaiting. We introduce to you the Jackie, Marilyn and Taylor Jackets! Each is a cropped fit with an open front that looks sharp with anything from a basic t-shirt and jeans to a pencil skirt and heels. The light-weight wool blend material is hearty and structured but not bulky by any means. With three colors to choose from, the jackets are quickly becoming fall favorites that compliment any wardrobe.
Here, Julia wears the Marilyn Jacket over an off-white HDH top created for Willy’s Detroit. For contrast, we styled her with a wide-leg HDH pant (available in October), a leather tote from Madewell and MIA boots.
Below Julia, we paired the black Taylor Jacket with a pair of dusty brown Gap booties and an HDH dress created for Clomes, a boutique based out of Switzerland.
The slate blue Jackie Jacket is seen here with Jeffery Campbell boots to accent the jacket’s cool hue. To their left, sit the black wide leg pants and the Marie Top; necklace found on Etsy.
We are so excited to be co-hosting a Makers Alongside event with Madewell on Thursday, September 11th. All of our current Makers Alongside pieces will be available for purchase.
We are also thrilled that Jon Wipfli from The Minnesota Spoon will be joining us to serve some yummy snacks. You do not want to miss what this party 🙂
This week’s releases, the Vinny Top, Joni Sweater, and Skye Sweater offer effortless comfort and style for any and everyday. Whether worn alone or polished with layers, the dusty whites and hazy greys allow a wide variety of color pairings. Each is lightweight for an easy transition from late summer to fall to the beginnings of winter.
Here, for a relaxed morning setting, we have combined each piece with basics found in any wardrobe. The pearly Vinny Top is fitted with navy Peace of Cloth trousers, a wool hat by Epoch and Sven Clogs for a deeper, colorblocked look. The Skye Sweater, seen on Lisa, is styled with her favorite skinny jeans, rosie suede Tesori boots and Madewell sunglasses. Lastly, Julia wears the Joni Sweater with a pair of dark wash jeans and boots by Mia.
Released today, the Marlowe Jumper. Perfect for any season, we have paired this simply with the Hackwith Design House Sandalwood Wrap, and Sven clogs.
Today’s release is the Bokeh top! Here we styled it with a Hackwith Design House cream skirt, paired with Sven clogs & a simple necklace from Cliche in Minneapolis. One of our favorites ways to wear this top is bunched up in an easy knot.
Hackwith Design House is so excited to announce our newest venture: The Tassletry. These unique wall hangings are a result of my unwillingness to throw away baskets and baskets of scrap fabric. After making some in my spare time for friends with all difference decorating styles, I realized that they can complement any space, bringing just the right amount of structure and whimsy. Each Tassletry is handmade and different than the one before, guaranteeing one-of-a-kind decor. They will come in small (16 inches), medium (28 inches), and large sizes (40 inches), and they will be released on the website as they are made so keep checking back for more. We will be officially launching them next Monday 2/17!!!
