Makers Alongside: Joanna Buyert of Fringe & Fettle

We’re thrilled to work again with Joanna Buyert, the maker and dear friend behind our new ceramic barrettes! Joanna is the sole creator and owner of Fringe & Fettle Ceramics, a business devoted to handmade pottery that she created in 2011 after quitting her full-time job. Following six months of living at her family’s cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin and doing nothing but making pots, she moved to St. Paul, where she is currently living (with her black lap pup, Liza) and working out of her apartment, a converted old brewery with a community of fellow artists.

The risks Joanna has taken to devote her life to pottery have been well worth it. She admits, “Everyday I get to do what I love more than anything else, create. I make things that I love. That’s the secret. It sounds kind of dumb and simple, but it’s true. I think for a while I was really caught up in trying to make what other people wanted, what would sell well. But it wasn’t until I threw that out the window and started making things that I wanted, that I loved, that I really found my style.” Joanna describes her style as “soft and playful, telling you where to touch, where to look” and finds most of her inspiration from “the romanticized atmosphere the kitchen creates; of family meals and childhood memories, of beauty in the everyday encounters.”

We think that all of Joanna’s pieces are beautiful and can find a spot in anyone’s home and will surely be used all year long. When asked what her favorite HDH piece is, she says, “I’d have to say all the hand-bleached fabrics are amazing and I want all of them.”

Meet Juliana Hung, our first 2015 Makers Alongside collaborator and the creative force behind jujumade.

Creative at a young age, years of reassembling and reimagining jewelry and fashion led Julie to begin creating her own wearable pieces. Following a career in industrial design, Julie founded jujumade as a platform from which she could illustrate her work and inspirations. The jujumade line and her creative process granted Julie the freedom she lacked as an industrial designer, and in 2012 Julie introduced a 2013 Autumn/Winter collection featuring handcrafted leatherwork and ceramic and stoneware jewelry.

Julie finds inspiration in the details around her: from intricate knots and trim to collaborative projects to her mother’s own style, Julie mixes materials together to create something unexpected.

The jujumade line embodies Julie’s passion for well-crafted design and attention to detail. Each piece is beautifully handmade from carefully selected materials which inspire Julie as much as the world around her. Julie’s deeply personal process result in pieces that are as unique as the wearers themselves.

Jujumade pieces can be purchased directly through jujumade’s website and in select stores around the United States. To purchase our jujumade x HDH porcelain and gold eclair earrings, visit our online store, and be sure to visit Julie on the jujumade website and Instagram!

To wrap up the year, HDH has collaborated with the woman behind Spring, Finn & Co. for our final 2014 Makers Alongside edition. Meet Talin Spring, a French expat, mother of two, and a wonderfully talented leather-craftswoman.

Talin was born in Istanbul to a European family and grew up in France. Her family was skilled in various mediums such as sewing and shoe making. Surrounded by a home of hand-made creations, Talin gained an appreciation for the great value of the hand.

Following her graduate studies at Columbia University in NY, Talin returned to Paris with her husband. After a twelve-year banking career and two children, she began to play with the idea of reorienting her career toward an artistic area. In preparation for this path, she took night classes in various studio and art history courses at ´Ecole Duperré. Then in 2002 after moving to Marseille and ending her banking career, she began her craft. Before beginning her own company, she spent time freelancing for French clothing companies as a designer where she was further enthused by the artisans and design and craft process.

image

Finally in 2011, Talin established Spring, Finn & Co. in Minneapolis where she now resides. Her leather works of bags and accessories, like HDH, are of chic minimal yet utilitarian designs in limited edition or one-of-a-kind. Her works are of only top grade American leather and canvas and hand stitching. Additionally, the highest level of quality is applied to every phase of each piece, assuring a beautiful result that lasts a lifetime. We are proud to close out the year with Spring, Finn & Co.!

Meet the folks behind Leather Works Minnesota and our most recent Makers Alongside collaboration:  Kent, Lee & Nathan.

LWM consists of husband and wife team, Kent and Lee, along with their son Nathan and a few other team members. Kent and Lee began the company from a basement in 1999 but have now grown to craft their quality leather goods from the famous art district of Lowertown, St. Paul.

Not only is the company helping rejuvenate the Lowertown neighborhood through a massive development project, but they are supporting the American Made movement. Like HDH, bringing back American made through quality products and materials is at the forefront of the LWM’s motivation. In fact, the majority of their leather is supplied by Red Wing’s S.B. Foot Tanning Company which is located less than one hours drive south of St. Paul.

Each LWM product is made by hand and thoroughly inspected at each phase to ensure that the final product is of the finest standards. This excellence in quality and care is made to be affordable for the average customer, something that the company takes great pride in. It’s no wonder why LWM’s customer base is incredibly loyal and rapidly growing!

Makers Alongside: Inks + Thread / / Maggie Pate

Meet Maggie Pate, the maker and creative genius behind the textile collection, Inks + Thread. We are excited to work with Maggie as our latest Makers Alongside to create the Maggie Top, a silk top with a pattern designed by Maggie.

It is difficult to pinpoint when exactly Maggie got started in her craft. Her escapades in the fashion industry began early with modeling at age 13 in New York City and working for designers. Never able to sit still, Maggie knew that she was not built to sit at a desk all day. With an aesthetic driven mind and a love of creativity and fashion, Maggie segued into silk painting in 2010.

image

Following Maggie’s move to Tennessee, Inks + Thread came to be after a creative lull in 2012, “there weren’t many outlets here so my best option was to conjure up something for myself.” No later than one year later, Maggie’s first release of prints came out.

For Maggie, prints and patterns are a poetic visual language formed by a synthesis of texture, repetition and geometry. Inspiration for her work comes from everything, including the color palette of wildflowers to geometric architecture to the texture and patina of aged metal or cultural symbols. Maggie’s latest fixation is with The Quilts of Bee’s Bend.

You can buy the silk top for $165 on our website. To keep up with Maggie you can shop on her website and follow her on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter.image

Makers Alongside

Our newest Makers Alongside collaborator is textile designer Maggie Pate of Inks + Thread.  Maggie crafted the beautiful fabric for our Maggie Top, a cream blouse featuring a delicate pattern of light and charcoal grays.  The Maggie Top can be comfortably styled for year-round wear.  We love it styled simply with a gold cuff and a pair of jeans.
