Makers Alongside: Janelle Wylie // tono + co.

Janelle Wylie is the creator of and color mastermind behind our most recent Makers Alongside piece, the Scout Scarf. Influenced by her mother who is also an artist, Janelle was exposed to art and color at a young age. After years of studying color and design, her passion towards fiber arts became a reality in 2016 with her online company, tono + co., that sells a myriad of hand-dyed fabrics, ranging from ribbon to table runners.

Janelle pulls most of her inspiration from her own surroundings, with details in architecture and nature often catching her eye. “I like to feel my inspiration from my surroundings, which makes it important to travel outside my comfort zone to keep it fresh”.

One of Janelle’s all-time favorite HDH pieces is our Limited Edition Winslow Dress, as she wears it as both an apron and a dress! If she’s going out, she likes to wear our Lia Dress, which she feels gives her a more elevated look. Although the Lia Dress is out of stock, our Wrap Dress offers similar movement and also features an overlapping front.

Visit tono + co.’s website and Instagram for more color eye-candy and beautiful products. Visit our blog for more ideas on how to wear the scarf, and order your own Scout Scarf here!

Today's Makers Alongside Release!

We are excited to announce our newest Makers Alongside piece, the Scout Scarf, hand-dyed by color enthusiast and creator of tono + co., Janelle Wylie. Its beautiful Earth-toned copper color gives off a great warm, bronzy sheen, and we love how the hand-rolled edge and and delicate stitching gives the scarf a personal, hand-made look. Super soft to the skin, the Scout Scarf can be worn in a variety of ways, and can be worn with or without the included brass ring. Order your Scout Scarf here, and learn more about the maker, Janelle Wylie, here.

New Makers Alongside Piece!

Today’s Makers Alongside piece will be our second collaboration with Kate Jennings, owner of the online shop, Na Nin. Our previous essential oil collaboration was such a hit, we will be revisiting the same Prairie Fire scent in the form of a travel-sized perfume! This perfume contains a custom blend of rosewood, jasmine, neroli, and vetiver, giving it a light floral scent with smokey undertones.

Lauren Neal is the Minneapolis maker behind the handmade jewelry line, NEAL, that we collaborated with for this month’s installment of Makers Alongside. Lauren took her first jewelry making class in 2008, and during that time she took full advantage of the lab and experimented with all the techniques and materials she could. She eventually decided that it was time to turn her love for jewelry making into a business, and in 2011 that dream came to fruition.

Lauren is most inspired by travel, especially the Pacific Northwest where she recently visited Oregon and Mount Rainier. Taking in architecture, art, and culture in new cities always offers her a new perspective, but she’s continually inspired by the art, sculpture, books and magazine found in her current city of Minneapolis.

Some of Lauren’s favorite pieces from HDH include the Denim Jacket in Black, the Sleeveless Tunic in Cream, and the Button-Up Skirt in Black because they all feel like pieces that would work effortlessly into her existing wardrobe.

We styled the scarf with our Cropped Button-Up Shirt in cream, the Swing Sweater Jacket in gray, the Autumn Stack bracelets from The Shine Project, and our favorite jeans from Noble Denim.

Makers Alongside: Allison Jenetopulos // Avrocomy

This month’s installment of Makers Alongside is a bracelet designed exclusively for HDH by Allison Jenetopulos, the metalsmith behind the Miami-based brand Avrocomy. Using skills gained during her education at the Art Institute of Chicago, Allison began making what she calls “wearable sculptures” for herself, but the attention drawn from others encouraged her to start a full-time business, and thus, Avrocomy was born in 2013.

Rather than designing for mass production, Allison finds joy in making each piece with her own two hands, and draws inspiration from architecture and art deco. Such influence is apparent in the angular shapes in our brass Geometric Cuff (shown below), available exclusively at HDH starting September 28. The delicacy of this piece is balanced by its statement-making diamond shapes.

The Salt Lake City based woodworker and maker behind this month’s Makers Alongside collaboration is Lynsey Schlegel of Love Lynsey. Lynsey’s educational background in Industrial Design as well as her previous work experience as a display artist helped her develop her own style and point of view which she has channeled into her business specializing in unique homegoods made of wood and metal.

Lynsey hand-selects each piece of wood used to create her pieces, which include bowls, serving boards, wall hangings, and tables; she delights in the unique patterns in the grain, naturally occurring knots or worm holes. In addition to textures or shapes in nature, architecture, art and fashion, Lynsey notes Japanese and Scandinavian design as a major source of inspiration. “I love the simplicity and thoughtfulness behind how things are designed,” she says.

We’ve collaborated with Love Lynsey to design a batch of eight elegant and timeless bowls, available June 15 on our website, made of cherry wood with a copper base. While we think this makes the perfect jewelry catch for your bedside or chest of drawers, its versatility allows it to be utilized in any space.
