Meet Maryanne Moodie, a New York transplant with a exquisite talent for weaving and our latest Maker’s Alongside collaborator.

With 11 years of teaching already under her belt, Maryanne began exploring and teaching the craft of weaving almost four years ago. Since then she has completed commissions, projects and collections for private and commercial clients. On top of that, she does anything she can to get people who are interested in weaving on the right path, whether that be making and selling beginner kits or demonstrating techniques.

Maryanne is someone who could never keep still, “I had too much energy to simply focus on one career path.” This is entirely evident based simply on her impressive background in art, styling, fashion, teaching and costume. This energy has enabled her to almost always run some kind of business from which she has gained invaluable knowledge and experience. More importantly, her past has helped her to find her tribe and figure out ways to support her community of small businesses near and far. In fact, we were pleased to hear that one of Maryanne’s favorite go-to outfits is one of our own, the overalls from a past HDH X Na Nin collaboration.

Until 2013, Maryanne’s studio was based in Melbourne when she moved to New York. Currently, she finds a lot of her inspiration in the city with the turning of the seasons and the energy that surrounds them, “I feel that there is always a feeling of expectation, anticipation and celebration in the air.” Other notable sources of inspiration for her woven tapestries are contemporary art, couture, architecture and her own nostalgia.

We are very excited to be featuring Maryanne and her beautiful work! Purchase any of the four one-of-a-kind woven tapestries for $550 on our website. You can also find Maryanne on Etsy, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter or contact her via email (hello@maryannemoodie.com).

Maker’s Alongside: Young Frankk / / Christine Young

Makers Alongside

Meet the creator and designer behind the noteworthy jewelry line, Young Frankk. After graduating Parsons School of Design for Illustration, Christine Young wanted to break away from drawing and painting and immerse herself in a fresh, unexplored creative outlet.

Christine started small and experimented in different jewelry making processes but soon found herself taken by the craft in teaching herself new techniques. Then in 2012, she made the move from New York City to Richmond, Virginia, and established her full-time business, Young Frankk. Today, Christine happily remains in Richmond creating beautiful pieces of jewelry, including the Truss Cuff that we were lucky enough to collaborate on!

Young Frankk jewelry incorporates Christine’s background in drawing and painting, translating these elements to metalwork. She finds inspiration in anything that catches her eye or sparks her interest, whether that be photography, nature, or fashion. A large driving force behind her work is the process of her craft itself, “from the first initial sketches of a design to the final look book concepts… I love every part of it.” This love of her trade definitely shows in her minimal but incredibly visual and bold designs. On top of that, everything is fabricated by Christine herself, resulting in unique pieces that really are one-of-a-kind.

To purchase the Young Frankk X HDH Truss Cuff, visit our online store! Check out Young Frankk’s past and present collections on her website. You can also follow Christina on Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, and Pinterest!

Meet our 10th Makers Alongside collaborator, the wonderful Ginny Sims of Ginny Sims Ceramics! Out of her humble studio, she has created for us a beautiful ceramic pitcher to hold our favorite teas, water and flowers.

image

Ginny started her craft early on in Little Rock, Arkansas sometime during high school. Influenced by instructors at the Arkansas Art Center Museum School where she took classes, she was instantly taken with pottery. “All it took for me to want to be a potter was to peek inside one of my teacher’s kitchen cabinets. It was all handmade pottery.” Later, Ginny took a few years to travel and found herself working with clay in Italy and Scotland. And finally, while apprenticing with Mike Dodd in southwestern England, her decision to pursue a career in ceramics was cemented.

image

Today, Ginny has a MFA under her belt and runs her own business, Ginny Sims Ceramics. European influence is evident throughout her work, specifically referencing English folk pottery and European Porcelains.  Most of Ginny’s inspiration comes from the every-day, something that she and HDH have in common! This includes people’s homes, traveling, and familiar objects found in kitchens. Although utilitarian in design, Ginny’s imagery on the surface of her work is quite incredible. She often pulls ideas from childhood memories, Greek mythology and films. The result of these elements is beautiful and unique–– we are lucky to be apart of it!

Ginny’s ceramic pitchers can be found here on our website! Other products can be found at The Foundry Home GoodsPowderhorn Kitchen, and various places. She also welcomes commissions and for folks to get in touch via her website. Be sure to stay updated on Ginny and her growing business on instagram too!

Makers Alongside: Martha W McQuade

Makers Alongside

Meet Martha W McQuade, a woman of many trades and the latest Makers Alongside collection talent. Her natural aptitude has graced us with an incredible piece – a hand-loomed sweater that is architecturally unique and beautifully crafted.

It is difficult to establish the exact age at which Martha began her craft. Growing up under her mother’s inventive influence, she was bestowed with several skills such as knitting and sewing at an early age. These types of hands-on artistries guided her interest in being trained as an architect. After completing the graduate program in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, she worked for several architecture offices but became impatient with the slow pace of the building process. “I missed making things with my hands. At this time I started knitting and sewing again and experimenting with materials in a direct, immediate way.” It didn’t take long before people began to notice and pursue her work, so her clothing and textile business took off.

Currently, Martha teaches architecture courses at her alma mater in addition to designing and creating landscapes, buildings, furniture, clothing and textiles out of her Minneapolis studio. No matter what she is designing, Martha’s overall design focus is on the form and pattern that “are derived through a study of material properties and the process of making.” This approach is noticeable in her work and requires constant but welcomed exploration of materials and processes. From this exploration, Martha finds a boundless amount of inspiration. “It’s a problem at times – there is so much out there that is interesting and there just isn’t enough time to act on all the ideas that I have.”

We weren’t surprised to hear that Martha’s favorite HDH piece is one created for Mille, a jumpsuit that reminds her of something a coverall that a mechanic might wear. And who knows, it’s entirely possible that she someday may add ‘mechanic’ to her ever-growing list of skills.

Martha’s sweater can be found on our website; act fast, only ten sweaters were created! Other designs can be found on her website or at other boutiques in the Twin Cities.

Make sure to keep up with Martha on Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. Oh, and join her mailing list

Makers Alongside: Karie Reinertson / / Shelter Protects You

Makers Alongside

imageMeet Karie, the maker behind our most recent Makers Alongside collection–fun and casual waxed canvas and leather backpacks. Karie has been designing and making ever since she could grasp a pencil and scissors when she was young. Because both of Karie’s parents were artists and craftspeople, she was always exposed to the creative lifestyle. “My father was a painter and worked on a wooden canoe at night for years, and my mom would make quilted purses and travel around selling them at fairs. There was always something creative to do in my household.” Her creative household only encouraged her more to pursue something in the arts. In high school, Karie and her closest friend started a small clothing company and sold to boutiques in and around Washington DC.

image    It wasn’t until 2009 when Karie started her current business, Shelter Protects You, in Vermont. “My partner Rob and I wanted a way to house our generalist tendencies under one roof, so Shelter was born. Shortly thereafter, we moved to Asheville and once the handbag side of things started to take off, Rob started his own design/build architecture firm.” This past April Karie and Rob collaboratively opened up their studio as a retail space as well, called Shelter Collective.

imageMost of Karie’s inspiration comes from people and travel. “There are these incredible fleeting moments that we all get to experience from time to time where everything feels lined up and just right. The sun shines a certain way through the trees and you feel your feet in the grass. They are simple, but they are what count. I’m always hoping to capture the feeling of that in any work that I do."

We as designers know what Karie is talking about, and that is something we value in our own work. When asked what her favorite HDH pieces are, Karie responded, "All of them! Though I really love the Shomu dress and Anko Top.” We love them too 🙂

You can find their bags on their website, and a few boutiques around the world. Any design work they do outside of handbags can be found here

Don’t forget to follow them on Instagram. Make sure to like their Facebook page as well!
