Makers Alongside: Kate Jennings // NA NIN

Makers Alongside

Kate Jennings is one of those people you immediately want to spend more time with when you meet her. She is a kindred spirit, and we could not be more thrilled that she joined us for Makers Alongside. Her custom fragrances are incredible, and we are honored to be the exclusive sellers of Prairie Fire.

Kate started a vintage clothing line in 2009, Na Nin Vintage. Na Nin means “I am” in Korean, and Kate came up with her brand name after her trip to South Korea. Kate began blending essential oils in 2013 and has been selling fragrances since January of this year. “My fragrances are inspired by a feeling or vision you have when listening to a certain song,” Kate says, and she means it. When Kate sent the first samples for Prairie Fire to us, she included a playlist for us to listen to while we smelled all our options. Her process is informed by music, travel, her friends and family, and random acts of kindness – like the sweet emails of encouragement she is always sending our way.

She is also inspired by her day job as a kindergarten teacher in an inner city school. She donates a portion of her profits from her online shop, shopnanin.com, to her school and her students. You can find her on Instagram @shopnanin and on Pinterest @katejennings, and if you happen to find yourself in Richmond, VA you can visit her on the weekends at Addison Handmade & Vintage.

Makers Alongside

Our second release for Makers Alongside is an exclusive fragrance from Na Nin called Prairie Fire which comes out May 21st. The scent is an intoxicating blend of rosewood, jasmine, neroli, and vetiver. It is inspired by those nights around a bonfire with good friends and the sound of the lake water lapping near by while damp wood crackles; the fresh air the smoke hasn’t reached yet smells like spring.

We will be releasing 25 of these amazing roll ons priced at $35.00, which are the perfect size to throw in your purse for when you need a little freshening up. And don’t forget to check back next week to learn all about the maker, Kate Jennings, from Na Nin and her incredible skills at making these lovely fragrances.

Makers Alongside: Wing Ta // Canary Grey Photography

Makers Alongside

We at Hackwith Design House could not wait to partner with Wing Ta of Canary Grey Photography on a product for Makers Alongside.  Wing does a lot of photos for HDH (just check out the banner photo on our homepage or the images over at Madesmith), but the project Wing and LIsa were most excited about was a photo shoot that led to the amazing print we released today.

Wing started Canary Grey Photography in 2010 and shortly after was able to commit to her new company full time.  Enjoying an artistic childhood, she eventually discovered photography was her medium of choice.  "Growing up, I either had a sketch pad in my hand or was on stage performing,“ says Wing, but as exemplified in her fantastic photos, Wing found the perfect way to express her artistic nature.  "I’m inspired by the simple things: clean design, creative collaboration, a good story.”  The desire to collaborate brought her and Lisa together, as well as a similar fashion sense.  "I love all the HDH pieces. The Shae Tank has been my newest go to piece and pairs perfectly with everything. Another favorite is the beautiful Millie Kimono. Everyone needs that in their closet.“  That’s exactly how we feel about Wing’s print–everyone needs one in their home.  Be sure to pick up yours today.

You can find out more about Wing on her website canarygrey.com or by following her on Instagram and Twitter @canarygrey.  Be sure to look there for future prints by her as well as if you have any photography needs.

Hackwith Design House invites you to join us in a new venture, Makers Alongside Hackwith Design House.  With the same cooperative spirit as our boutique collaborations, we are expanding the “Goods” section of our online shop with products designed and made by artists and makers from around the country.

Lisa collaborated with each maker in designing a product that fits with both the HDH aesthetic as well as the maker’s.  Each product has been made for HDH alone, and there will be no more than 25 of each piece, keeping with our mission to create unique items that will be the new highlight of your home.

Makers Alongside begins May 7th.  A new item will be released on the first and third Wednesday of every month, so check back to see our new products as well as info about the makers!
